Ian Hewitt looks at why people succeed at reaching their goals better in groups than trying to do it alone.
Upon returning to Perth after 15 years of living, teaching English and doing business in Japan, I found my youngest brother, Alan, was very successfully promoting a great product at Meditate.com.au. Although I had done okay in business (owner of TestsTestsTests.com and TypingCertification.com ), we were not in the same league — he was way out in front. So I asked his ‘secret’ and he simply replied: "Mentors and mastermind groups." He then introduced me to Mal Emery's Mastermind Group and let me know he often went away to ‘Wealth Creation Seminars’ in Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne and other places. It was obviously working very well for him!
The Penny Drops
Alan then invited me to one of Dan Kennedy's Mega Marketing Seminars in Chicago. I got some great ideas, heard brilliant speakers and felt it was worth the US$1,995, plus airfare and hotel. But still, the penny had not fully dropped. I then joined Mal Emery's Platinum Mastermind Group and suddenly I was implementing all these great ideas that other members just loved sharing with me. Due to the great advice and ideas my typing site doubled in net profit!
Then the penny dropped, it was so much easier to be successful using the power of the group. It is almost like magic!
Members go out of their way to help you. In the group it is quite okay to say, "I made $150,000 this year and next year I am shooting for $300,000!;" and everyone is happy for you and wants to help you reach your goal. Sadly, this is not the case in many families and even groups of friends.
Specific Advice
I have now been to a few other ‘Rebellious Millionaire’ and ‘Silent Killer Cash Flow’ seminars and have prospered greatly from them. I also have a couple of ‘mentors’ that give specific business advice, and I joined XL Results Foundation, which is also invaluable.
Now I wonder how successful people without mentors or a Mastermind Group do it, and have much more respect for anyone that has made lots of money without them.
Since discovering ‘the bit I missed from Think and Grow Rich’ I have become a bit of a student of ‘Master Mind’ groups. The following is what I learned:
First let's define a Mastermind Group. In 1938 Napoleon Hill wrote in Think and Grow Rich that having a Mastermind Group is essential for success.
"You, who read this book, will get most out of it by putting into practice the Master Mind principle described in the book. This you can do (as others are doing so successfully) by forming a study club, consisting of any desired number of people who are friendly and harmonious."

12 Step Programmes
I have also been told that ‘12 Step Programmes’, (first discovered by Bill Wilson and Dr Bob Smith of Alcoholics Anonymous), have empowered more people to radical change than any other process in the history of mankind.
What was discovered was that alone, neither Bill nor Bob could stop drinking and were near death. However, together with the same goal they could achieve sobriety.
Nobody is certain to how AA works exactly, but it is undeniable the incredible success achieved worldwide. There are now over 40 types of ‘12 Step Groups’.
Thinking about this I realized that is probably why there is Weight Watchers. What people can't do individually, they can achieve in a group. Again, this is the ‘MasterMind Group’ principle.
Often, what is impossible, or very difficult, for the individual, is quite doable in a group, seems to be the big lesson.
The above was a year ago and now I own a few condos in Phuket, Thailand. I also have good friends who were dying to attend these events, but live there and were unable to make it back to Australia regularly. So at our ‘Master Mind Meeting’ recently, I suggested we could hold one in beautiful Phuket with all the best speakers attending for the first (and probably only) time. We also knew we could do it at a very good price that we could pass on, (in Thailand you get a good price when you book 150 hotel rooms not in peak season!)
